The two campaigns aren’t that dissimilar from each other. The commanders can really turn the tide of battle. Andy repairs units, while Max increases firepower. Beyond being fun personalities, COs have unique abilities on the battlefield. Set in the colorful, distressingly militaristic Wars World, these campaigns put you in charge of various commanding officers (COs), representing their nations in increasingly escalating conflicts. You’re not trying to kiss knights, you’re just trying to build tanks. Advance Wars, to its great benefit, focuses on raw military tactics.
Nintendo fans may immediately notice its similarities to sibling strategy series Fire Emblem, but those medieval games supplement their tactics with role-playing game elements (even if Fire Emblem Engage recently rolled a lot of that back). We didn’t realize how much we missed it until came back, and the game easily earns our Editors' Choice award. It’s not quite as visually impressive as some of the truly stunning remakes we’ve already gotten in 2023, but Advance Wars' strategic core gameplay remains brilliant. This Nintendo Switch game includes remakes of the original two Advance Wars campaigns for the Game Boy Advance handheld, along with multiplayer features and other extras to round out the $59.99 package.
